Side by side

How we picked

How we picked: nine laptops in our catalogue state an AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX, and since that is fewer than 12, this page lists every one. Two are reseller configurations of ASUS TUF Gaming laptops with memory and storage added by the reseller; we label them. The list also holds two near-identical HP OMEN 16 listings with an RTX 5070 that differ only in storage, and two HP OMEN listings with an RTX 5060 that differ in memory and storage; we keep all four because the catalogue has no other 8940HX laptops, and we say how they differ. Processor facts come from ASUS spec pages, GPU facts from NVIDIA. Prices on this page are live: each one is read from the store listing and shown with the time it was read. Nobody at wikilaptop.org has tested these units; every comparison is drawn from the stated specifications.

How to choose

What the Ryzen 9 8940HX is

ASUS lists the Ryzen 9 8940HX with 16 cores, 32 threads, 80MB of cache, a 2.4 GHz base clock and a boost of up to 5.3 GHz. It is an HX chip: built for peak performance in large gaming and workstation laptops, not for battery life.

The processor helps with compiling code, rendering, video export and CPU-heavy games, but the graphics card still sets most frame rates. Choose the GPU first, then the rest.

Graphics: RTX 5050 to RTX 5080

All nine picks use NVIDIA's RTX 50 series, built on the Blackwell architecture. Four have an RTX 5070, two an RTX 5060, and one each an RTX 5050, RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080. Graphics memory grows with the tier: the RTX 5070 listings state 8GB, the RTX 5070 Ti 12GB and the RTX 5080 16GB, and NVIDIA lists 8GB for the RTX 5050. The two RTX 5060 listings do not state their graphics memory.

Screen size and refresh rate

Seven picks have a 16-inch screen and two an 18-inch screen. Four run at 240Hz, one at 165Hz and four at 144Hz. A 240Hz screen pays off with an RTX 5070 or faster in competitive games.

Weight runs from 2.2 kg to 2.7 kg. These are laptops for a desk that move now and then, and the charger adds more.

Memory and reseller builds

Memory runs from 16GB to 128GB. ASUS lists two memory slots and a 64GB maximum for both the TUF Gaming A16 (2025) and TUF Gaming A18 (2025), yet the reseller builds of those models state 96GB and 128GB. Reseller builds can be fine, but ask which modules were fitted, who handles warranty claims and whether the maker's warranty still applies.

Battery life expectations

HX processors and RTX GPUs are designed for performance, not runtime. Plan to work near an outlet for anything heavy. ASUS lists a 90Wh battery for the TUF Gaming A18 (2025) and 70Wh to 90Wh for the TUF Gaming A16 (2025); most listings here do not state battery size, so check the maker's page.

Questions

Is the Ryzen 9 8940HX good for content creation?

Yes. ASUS lists it with 16 cores and 32 threads, which speeds up video export, 3D rendering and code compilation. Pair it with enough memory for your projects and a GPU that your editing or rendering software can use. The Vector A16 HX here combines 64GB of memory with an RTX 5080.

How does the Ryzen 9 8940HX compare with the Ryzen 9 9955HX?

On ASUS's spec page for the ROG Strix G18 (2025), both chips have 16 cores, 32 threads and 80MB of cache. The 9955HX has a 2.5 GHz base and up to 5.4 GHz boost, against 2.4 GHz and up to 5.3 GHz for the 8940HX. The GPU in the laptop matters more for games.

What battery life should I expect?

Shorter than with low-power chips. HX processors are built for performance and are paired here with RTX graphics, so plan to stay near an outlet for heavy work. Check the battery capacity in Wh on the maker's page, since most listings in this list do not state it.

Did you test these laptops?

No. Nobody at wikilaptop.org has used these units. We compared them from the specifications stated on each listing, cross-checked with ASUS and NVIDIA published data. We do not describe heat, noise or keyboard feel, because those claims need testing we have not done.

Why do prices on this page change?

Each price is read live from the store listing and shown with the time it was read. Gaming laptop prices move often, so we never write price comparisons into the text. Check the time next to each price and open the listing to confirm the configuration before you buy.
