Side by side

How we picked

How we picked: our catalogue holds 20 listings that state an RTX 5080. We skipped one listing with a misspelled brand name sold by an unknown seller, then merged repeated configurations of the same model (the MSI Vector 16 HX AI appears four times, the Legion Pro 7i, Raider A18 HX, Stealth A18 AI+ and Strix Scar 18 twice each) and kept one entry per clearly different setup. Seven picks are reseller builds from two resellers and one HP machine is listed by a third-party seller; the RTX 5080 catalogue leans heavily on such builds, and we label each one. GPU facts come from NVIDIA and CPU facts from Intel. Prices on this page are live: each one is read from the store listing and shown with the time it was read. Nobody at wikilaptop.org has tested these units; every comparison below is drawn from the stated specifications.

How to choose

What the RTX 5080 is

The RTX 5080 is a high-end NVIDIA laptop GPU from the RTX 50 series, built on the Blackwell architecture. NVIDIA lists 16GB of GDDR7 graphics memory, 896 GB/s of memory bandwidth and a boost clock range of 1,500 to 2,287 MHz. It sits below the RTX 5090 (24GB) and above the RTX 5070 Ti (12GB).

It targets 4K and high-refresh gaming, heavy 3D rendering, video effects and local AI work. It supports DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation, which NVIDIA describes as using AI to raise frame rates on RTX 50 series GPUs.

Same GPU name, different performance

NVIDIA publishes a clock range, and each maker sets the power limit its design runs at. Two laptops that both say RTX 5080 can therefore perform differently, and a thin sub-2 kg machine can run at a lower limit than a thick 18-inch one. The listings here rarely state GPU power, so check the maker's spec page when two options look close.

Maker configuration or reseller build

Only four picks are sold in the maker's own configuration (Lenovo, ASUS and two from MSI). Seven are reseller builds, which add memory and storage to a maker's machine, and one HP machine is listed by a third-party seller. Reseller builds are the only way to get some combinations here, such as 192GB of memory; if you prefer a standard configuration, start with the maker-sold picks.

Processor and memory

Match the processor to the GPU. HX chips such as the Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX (24 cores per Intel) or AMD's Ryzen 9 HX parts keep up in games and rendering, but they are built for performance, not battery life. The H-series Core Ultra 9 386H in the lighter picks trades some processor headroom for a slimmer design.

Nine of the 12 picks have 64GB of memory or more. That helps large video, 3D and AI projects; for gaming alone, 32GB is a comfortable level.

Screen size, refresh rate and weight

Eight picks have a 240Hz screen, one 300Hz, one 200Hz and two 120Hz. The 16-inch picks are listed from 1.76 to 2.7 kg and the 18-inch picks from 2.9 to 3.7 kg. An 18-inch RTX 5080 laptop is a desktop replacement; if you travel, look at the 16-inch picks under 2 kg.

Questions

Is the RTX 5080 overkill for gaming?

At 1080p, or at 1440p with moderate settings, often yes, and an RTX 5070 Ti laptop with 12GB may be enough. The RTX 5080 pays off at 4K, with heavy ray tracing, at high refresh rates, and in creative or AI work that benefits from its 16GB of graphics memory.

RTX 5080 or RTX 5090 laptop?

NVIDIA lists 24GB of graphics memory for the RTX 5090 against 16GB for the RTX 5080, and both have 896 GB/s of memory bandwidth. The extra memory matters most for large AI models and heavy 3D scenes. For gaming, the gap depends a lot on each laptop's power limit, so compare specific machines.

What battery life should I expect?

Short when the GPU is working. The RTX 5080 and the HX processors in most picks draw a lot of power, so plan to stay plugged in for games and rendering. For light tasks on battery, use the integrated graphics mode if the laptop offers one.

Does the power adapter matter?

Yes. High-end GPU laptops ship with large adapters, and full performance usually needs the included one. The listings here do not state adapter size, so check the maker's spec page if you carry the laptop and the adapter together.

Why are so many picks reseller builds?

The RTX 5080 listings in our catalogue lean on reseller builds that add memory and storage to a maker's machine. We include them where they offer something the maker listings do not, such as 128GB or 192GB of memory or a sub-2 kg design, and label each one. The four maker-sold picks are the safest starting point.
