AMD Ryzen Laptop Chips Explained: U, HS, HX and AI

Short answer: An AMD Ryzen laptop chip name tells you three things: the tier (Ryzen 3, 5, 7 or 9), the family (for example Ryzen 7000, Ryzen 200 or Ryzen AI 300 and 400) and the power class. U chips are AMD's efficient class for thin laptops, HS chips bring H-class performance to thinner designs, and HX chips are the top class for gaming and creator laptops. Ryzen AI chips add a large NPU. Pick the power class first, then the tier, then check the Radeon graphics name.

How to read a Ryzen laptop model number

Take AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS as the example. It has a brand (Ryzen), a tier (7), a four-digit model number (7735) and a suffix (HS). AMD's press release for the Ryzen 7035 Series lists this chip with 8 cores, 16 threads and a 35W TDP. The tier is the part most buyers notice, but the suffix tells you more about the laptop the chip goes into.

The tier works like a ladder inside one family: Ryzen 3 is the entry step, Ryzen 5 the mainstream step, Ryzen 7 the upper step and Ryzen 9 the top. In AMD's own tables a higher tier in the same family usually means more cores, more cache or higher boost clocks. In the Ryzen 7035 Series, for example, AMD lists the Ryzen 3 7335U with 4 cores, the Ryzen 5 7535U with 6 cores and the Ryzen 7 7735U with 8 cores, all in the same 15-28W class.

The number places the chip in a family. The first digit of a four-digit number such as 7735 is the family (7000 Series), and AMD groups chips by the first two digits in its announcements, such as the Ryzen 7035 Series, Ryzen 7030 Series and Ryzen 7040 Series. Those groups are not all the same design: AMD describes the 7030 Series as built on the older "Zen 3" core on 7nm, and the 7040 Series on 4nm. So two chips that both start with 7 can be a generation apart. Read the whole number, not only the first digit.

Newer chips drop the four-digit style. The Ryzen 200 Series uses three-digit names with no suffix (Ryzen 7 260), and the Ryzen AI family puts AI and, on the top parts, HX in front of the number (Ryzen AI 9 HX 370).

What U, H, HS and HX mean

AMD described the suffixes plainly when it launched the Ryzen 5000 mobile chips. U-Series processors "offer the perfect blend of performance and efficiency" for "mainstream consumers looking for performance on-the-go." H-Series processors "deliver impressive gaming experiences." HS processors "bring the power of H-Series in thinner and lighter form factors." HX processors "provide gamers and creators with elite-level performance."

The power figures AMD publishes for each chip show the same order. TDP is the sustained power class AMD lists for the chip; laptop makers tune within it, so the same chip can behave a little differently in a thin chassis and a thick one, but the suffix sets the range.

  • U (efficient): chips such as the Ryzen 7 7730U run at 15W. This is the class for thin office and student laptops where battery life and quiet running matter more than peak speed. See the Ryzen 7 7730U laptops guide.
  • H (high performance): AMD lists H chips such as the Ryzen 5 6600H and Ryzen 7 6800H at 45W. They suit performance laptops that are allowed to be thicker. See the Ryzen 5 6600H laptops guide.
  • HS (H-class, thinner): the Ryzen 6000 HS chips are listed at 35W against 45W for the matching H chips, with the same core counts. The later 7040HS chips are listed at 35-45W. See the Ryzen 7 7735HS laptops guide.
  • HX (top class): the Ryzen 9 9955HX has 16 cores and 32 threads and a 55-75W TDP. Its integrated Radeon 610M is basic, because HX laptops are built around a dedicated graphics card. See the Ryzen 9 9955HX laptops guide.

Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen AI 400

In 2024 AMD launched the Ryzen AI 300 Series, which it called the third generation of Ryzen AI, built on "Zen 5" cores with an XDNA 2 NPU rated at 50 TOPS. The name changes shape: the tier comes after AI (Ryzen AI 5, 7 or 9), HX moves in front of the number on the top chips, and the number is three digits starting with 3. The Ryzen AI 400 Series, announced at CES 2026, follows the same pattern with numbers starting with 4.

These chips do not carry U or HS suffixes. Instead AMD lists a wide TDP range for them: 15-54W for the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, Ryzen AI 9 365, Ryzen AI 7 350 and Ryzen AI 5 340. That range lets the same chip go into a thin laptop at low power or a thicker one at high power, so the laptop's design matters as much as the chip name. The HX in Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 sits on the top models of the family; it does not put the chip in the 55-75W class of the Ryzen 9000HX chips.

Every Ryzen AI 300 and 400 model AMD lists has an NPU of at least 50 TOPS, and the Ryzen AI 9 HX 475 is listed at 60 TOPS. PRO models (for example Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350) are the business versions; AMD says its PRO variants add "enterprise-grade security and manageability tools." The Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350 laptops guide covers them. For what the NPU does in practice, see laptop specs for local AI.

Ryzen 200: three digits, no suffix

The Ryzen 200 Series, announced at CES 2025, uses "Zen 4" cores, RDNA 3 graphics and an NPU of up to 16 TOPS. Its names have no suffix at all, so the name alone does not tell you the power class. AMD's table does: the Ryzen 9 270, Ryzen 7 260 and Ryzen 5 240 are listed at 35-54W, while the Ryzen 7 250, Ryzen 5 230, Ryzen 5 220 and Ryzen 3 210 are listed at 15-30W.

Both Ryzen 7 chips have 8 cores, 16 threads and Radeon 780M graphics, so the practical difference is the power class: the 260 for performance laptops, the 250 for thinner ones. See the Ryzen 7 260 laptops and Ryzen 7 250 laptops guides.

Radeon integrated graphics names

Most Ryzen laptop chips include Radeon graphics, and the name is a three-digit number ending in M. Within one generation, AMD pairs the higher numbers with the higher processor tiers, as its own tables show, so read the graphics name as a tier of its own.

Radeon 890M is the top integrated GPU of the Ryzen AI 300 and 400 families, in the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, HX 470 and HX 475. Radeon 880M comes with the Ryzen AI 9 365 and 465, 860M with the Ryzen AI 7 350 and 450, and 840M with the Ryzen AI 5 chips and the Ryzen AI 7 445. The Radeon 890M laptops guide collects the top models.

Radeon 780M is the top graphics of the previous generation. AMD lists it with the Ryzen 9 7940HS and Ryzen 7 7840HS, and later with the Ryzen 9 270, Ryzen 7 260 and Ryzen 7 250. The Ryzen 5 chips of those families get the Radeon 760M, and the Ryzen 5 220 and Ryzen 3 210 the Radeon 740M. The Radeon 780M laptops guide lists current models.

Radeon 680M and 660M are older names that you will still see on value laptops. We could not open AMD's product pages for those two GPUs, so we do not quote their specifications here; check the laptop's spec sheet for the exact processor. At the other end, the Radeon 610M in HX chips is a basic display engine for laptops that rely on a dedicated GPU. For when built-in graphics is enough, see laptop GPU tiers explained.

How to choose by use

Start from what you do on the laptop and how often it leaves the desk. The power class follows from that answer, and the tier and graphics come after.

For writing, browsing, office work and classes, a U chip or a low-power Ryzen 200 chip is the right class. They run at low power, which helps battery life and lets the laptop stay thin and quiet.

For photo editing, programming, light video work and casual games without a dedicated GPU, look at chips with the stronger integrated graphics: Radeon 780M in the HS and Ryzen 200 families, or Radeon 880M and 890M in the Ryzen AI families. A Ryzen AI chip also adds the large NPU if you want Copilot+ features and on-device AI.

For gaming, 3D, engineering software and long renders, HX is the class to pick, with a dedicated GPU. Expect a heavier laptop and a large power adapter; that is the trade for the most CPU cores AMD lists among the chips covered here. If you are comparing against Intel, the naming logic is similar: see Intel Core Ultra names explained.
