How Much VRAM Does a Gaming Laptop Need?

Short answer: For 1080p gaming, 8GB of VRAM is the practical baseline: CD PROJEKT RED lists 8GB for Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p High and 12GB for 4K Ultra or 1080p with maximum ray tracing. Every GeForce RTX 50 laptop GPU has at least 8GB. Choose 12GB (RTX 5070 Ti or the 12GB RTX 5070) for higher resolutions and heavy ray tracing, and 16GB or 24GB (RTX 5080, RTX 5090) for 4K, 3D work and local AI.

What graphics memory actually holds

VRAM (video memory, or graphics memory) is the fast memory soldered next to a laptop's discrete GPU. It is separate from the system RAM the processor uses, and the GPU reads from it at full speed while it draws each frame. Whatever the game needs to render the scene in front of you should sit in VRAM.

The largest share is usually textures: the images wrapped over every surface, from walls and terrain to faces and weapons. Higher texture settings load larger, sharper versions of those images, so they are the setting that grows VRAM use fastest. The rest goes to frame buffers (the finished image and the in-between images the GPU builds on the way to it), geometry, shadow maps, and the extra data that ray tracing and upscaling features keep in memory.

When a game asks for more than the GPU has, the overflow is pushed out to system memory, which the GPU reaches far more slowly. The usual symptoms are stutter, textures that load late or look blurry, and games that quietly lower texture quality. More VRAM does not make a GPU faster on its own, but running short of it makes almost any GPU slower.

On a laptop, VRAM is fixed at purchase. You cannot add more later, so it is worth buying with some room for the games and apps you expect to run over the next few years.

How much VRAM each RTX 50 laptop GPU has

NVIDIA sets the memory size for each laptop GPU, so the GPU name tells you the VRAM, with one exception. The table repeats the figures from NVIDIA's laptop GPU comparison page and its GeForce RTX 50 Series laptops page. The RTX 4050 Laptop GPU from the previous generation is included because many laptops with it are still on sale, and it is the most common 6GB option.

Note the RTX 5070: NVIDIA lists it with either 12GB or 8GB, so check the exact configuration before you buy. For a fuller look at cores, bandwidth and power limits across the range, see laptop GPU tiers explained.

What games ask for: a published example

The most reliable guide to VRAM is the system requirements a game's own developer publishes. CD PROJEKT RED's support site lists Cyberpunk 2077 requirements (for Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty) with a separate VRAM figure for each tier, which makes it a useful example of how memory needs climb with resolution, presets and ray tracing.

The GPUs named on that page are desktop cards, and laptop GPUs with similar names do not perform the same, so compare the VRAM column rather than the card names. What the table shows is the pattern: the same 1080p resolution needs 6GB at the Low preset, 8GB at High and 12GB with ray tracing at its Ultra preset. Moving to 4K with the heaviest ray tracing mode takes it to 16GB.

Resolution and texture settings

Two settings do most of the work in deciding how much VRAM a game uses. Resolution sets the size of every frame buffer: a 2560 x 1600 or 4K image has many more pixels to store than a 1920 x 1080 one, and effects that work per pixel grow with it. Texture quality sets how large the images on every surface are. Ray tracing adds its own data on top of both.

That gives you levers when memory is tight. Lowering texture quality one step usually frees the most VRAM for the least visible change, and upscaling (rendering at a lower internal resolution and scaling the image up) reduces the resolution the GPU actually renders. Many games also show an estimate of VRAM use in their graphics menu, which is worth checking before you blame the GPU for stutter.

Match the VRAM to the screen you will play on. Most gaming laptops with 8GB GPUs have 1080p or 1200p panels, where 8GB lines up with a published High preset like the one above. Laptops with higher resolution screens make a stronger case for 12GB or more, because they push both frame buffers and texture expectations up.

  • 1080p or 1200p screen, mainstream and esports games: 8GB.
  • 1440p or 1600p screen, high textures, some ray tracing: 12GB.
  • 4K output or maximum ray tracing: 16GB or 24GB.

VRAM for creative apps and local AI

Games are not the only workload that fills graphics memory. The Blender Foundation lists 8GB of VRAM as the recommended graphics card memory for Blender (with 2GB as the minimum), and larger 3D scenes with detailed textures grow from there. NVIDIA's RTX 50 Series laptops page highlights the GPU's video encoder for exports and effects in DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Premiere, and video timelines with effects also keep their frames in graphics memory.

Local AI is where VRAM matters most, because a model generally has to fit in graphics memory to run at full speed. NVIDIA's own ChatRTX app lists a GeForce RTX 30 or 40 Series GPU with at least 8GB of VRAM, or an RTX 5080 or RTX 5090, among its requirements. NVIDIA's developer blog gives the memory cost per parameter as 2 bytes at FP16, 1 byte at FP8 or INT8 and half a byte at FP4, so a 7 billion parameter model needs about 14GB just for its weights at FP16 and about 3.5GB at FP4.

Image generation shows the same effect. NVIDIA states that the FLUX.1 [dev] image model needs over 23GB in FP16 but less than 10GB when run in FP4, a format RTX 50 Series GPUs support. In practice, 8GB lets you try small, heavily compressed models; 12GB and 16GB widen the choice; and 24GB on the RTX 5090 is the largest graphics memory NVIDIA lists for a GeForce laptop GPU. For the full picture, including RAM and storage, read laptop specs for local AI.

Shared memory on integrated graphics

Laptops without a discrete GPU have no VRAM of their own. Intel's support documentation states that its integrated graphics do not use a separate memory bank for graphics; the GPU uses system memory, and on 5th generation Core processors and later, including Core Ultra, the operating system limits graphics memory to one half of system memory. Intel also says you cannot set the amount yourself, because it is allocated dynamically, and that the figure Windows reports is a maximum, not a permanent reservation.

Integrated Radeon graphics in AMD Ryzen laptops work on the same shared principle: graphics and the processor draw on one pool of system RAM. This is why a laptop with integrated graphics can show a large graphics memory figure in Windows while still being slower than an entry-level RTX GPU: the memory is shared, and system RAM is much slower than GDDR7.

For integrated graphics, more and faster system RAM helps, since it raises the ceiling Intel describes and gives the GPU more bandwidth. It does not turn integrated graphics into a gaming GPU. If light and older games are all you play, see is integrated graphics enough.

How much VRAM to buy

Start from your screen and the heaviest thing you will run, then choose the smallest memory size that covers it with some room to spare. These are rules of thumb built on the published figures above, not measured results.

6GB is now the floor, found mostly on previous-generation GPUs such as the RTX 4050. It still runs esports titles and older games well, but newer games already list 6GB as their minimum. 8GB is the entry point for the whole RTX 50 laptop line and matches published 1080p High requirements. 12GB is the comfortable choice for higher resolution screens, ray tracing, and Blender or video work. 16GB and 24GB are for 4K, the heaviest ray tracing presets, larger 3D scenes and local AI models.

Keep in mind that VRAM is one spec among several. A higher-tier GPU also brings more cores and bandwidth, and the laptop's power limit and cooling still decide how fast it runs. For a broad shortlist across every tier, start with the gaming laptops guide.

Questions

Is 8GB of VRAM enough for a gaming laptop?

For 1080p gaming, yes in most cases. CD PROJEKT RED lists 8GB for Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p with the High preset. It gets tight at higher resolutions and with heavy ray tracing, where the same game lists 12GB or 16GB.

Can I upgrade the VRAM in a laptop later?

No. Laptop graphics memory is soldered in place, and NVIDIA sets the size for each laptop GPU. Choose the amount you need at purchase.

Does the RTX 5070 laptop GPU have 8GB or 12GB?

NVIDIA lists the RTX 5070 Laptop GPU with either 12GB or 8GB of GDDR7. The laptop maker picks the version, so check the spec sheet of the exact configuration.

Why does Windows show a large amount of shared GPU memory?

That is system RAM the GPU is allowed to borrow. Intel states that on modern processors the operating system limits it to one half of system memory and that it is a maximum, not a fixed reservation. It is much slower than dedicated VRAM.

How much VRAM do I need for local AI?

As much as you can get. NVIDIA's ChatRTX lists at least 8GB of VRAM on RTX 30 or 40 Series GPUs, and NVIDIA's figures of 2 bytes per parameter at FP16 and half a byte at FP4 mean model size and precision decide the rest. 16GB and 24GB open up far more models than 8GB.

Does more VRAM make games run faster?

Only when a game needs more memory than the GPU has. Enough VRAM prevents stutter and blurry textures, but a GPU with extra memory and fewer cores will not beat a stronger GPU that already has enough.
