MacBook or Windows Laptop: How to Choose

Short answer: Start with your software, not the logo. If every app you rely on runs on macOS and you own an iPhone, a MacBook is a strong, simple choice. If you play PC games, need Windows-only tools, want many makers and designs to choose from, or want the option to upgrade parts later, pick a Windows laptop. On Windows, also check whether a model uses an Arm or an x86 chip, because some drivers and games only work on x86.

Start with the apps you cannot live without

The single most important check is software compatibility. Make a list of every program you need for school, work and hobbies, then open each vendor's official system requirements page and confirm which operating systems and processors it supports. Many popular apps run on both macOS and Windows, but some specialist tools, engineering suites, tax programs, school exam software and internal business apps are Windows-only. A few creative and developer tools are Mac-only.

On a Mac with Apple silicon, apps come in three types. Apple's support page explains that the Finder's Get Info window shows an app as "Application (Intel)", "Application (Universal)" or "Application (Apple silicon)". Intel-only apps run through Rosetta, which translates them in the background. Apple states that Rosetta is available on any Mac with Apple silicon using macOS 27 or earlier, and that starting with macOS 28 it will be available only for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks. Apple recommends replacing Intel apps with Universal or Apple silicon versions, so check that your key apps have one.

If you still need an occasional Windows program on a Mac, note that Boot Camp is not an option on current Macs. Apple's Boot Camp page lists only Intel-based models and explicitly excludes the first Apple silicon MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Running Windows on an Apple silicon Mac means using virtualization software instead, and Microsoft notes that some Windows 11 features, including certain security features, might not be available or fully functional when using Parallels Desktop for Mac.

Windows on Arm vs x86 Windows laptops

Windows laptops are no longer a single category. Many use x86 chips from Intel or AMD, which run the widest range of Windows software and drivers. A growing number use Arm chips such as the Snapdragon X Series, which Microsoft describes as offering 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS) on its NPU. Microsoft says the Arm architecture is power-frugal, which lets these devices offer longer battery life.

Compatibility is the tradeoff. Microsoft's documentation says Windows 11 runs unmodified x86 and x64 apps on Arm devices under emulation, and its support FAQ says Arm-based PCs include the Prism emulator for better performance in emulated apps. Arm-native apps run without emulation and give the best performance and battery life. The limits are in drivers: Microsoft states that drivers for hardware, games and apps only work if they are designed for a Windows 11 Arm-based PC, and that peripherals work only if their drivers are built into Windows 11 or the maker has released Arm64 drivers. Microsoft also warns that apps which customize Windows, including some input method editors, assistive technologies and cloud storage apps, might have problems.

Microsoft points buyers to its Windows on Arm Ready Software site to check apps and games before buying. If you use an older printer, a scanner, lab equipment, a VPN client or any tool that installs its own driver, an x86 laptop is the safer pick unless the vendor confirms Arm64 support.

Gaming: Windows has the wider library

If PC gaming matters to you, Windows is the default answer. Game availability differs between the two platforms, and a game offered for Windows is not always offered for macOS. Always check each game's store page or publisher site for its supported platforms before you decide.

Within Windows, the chip matters too. Microsoft's Arm FAQ says games and apps might not work if they rely on anti-cheat drivers that are not made for Windows 11 Arm-based PCs, and advises checking with the game publisher. For competitive online games, that points to an x86 laptop with a dedicated GPU. Our gaming laptop picks are all Windows machines, and the laptop GPU tiers explained article shows how to match a graphics chip to the games you play.

Macs can play games that are released for macOS, and casual players who enjoy those titles may be happy with one. Treat gaming on a Mac as a bonus to confirm game by game, not a reason to buy.

Hardware choice and upgradeability

A MacBook comes from one maker, Apple, in a small number of families such as MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. That keeps the choice simple and the build consistent, but it also means fewer options for screen type, keyboard layout, ports, weight and chassis style. Windows laptops come from many makers in many shapes: thin business notebooks, convertibles with touch screens and pens, rugged models, large-screen desktop replacements and gaming machines. If you want a specific feature, such as a numeric keypad or a certain port, Windows gives you more places to find it. Compare the two ranges in our Apple laptop guide and Windows 11 laptop guide.

Upgradeability also differs. Apple's MacBook Air tech specs page lists memory as an option you set when you configure the laptop: the M5 MacBook Air starts at 16GB of unified memory and is configurable to 24GB or 32GB on some models. Plan for the memory and storage you will need over the laptop's whole life when you buy. Some Windows laptops have memory slots or a spare storage bay that you can use later, while many thin models do not. If upgrading later matters to you, read the maker's own spec page or service manual for that exact model before buying.

Apple silicon and unified memory

Apple silicon Macs use unified memory. Apple explains in its M5 announcement that this design lets the entire chip, including the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine, access a large single pool of memory, and it lists M5 unified memory bandwidth at 153GB/s. Because the GPU draws from the same pool as the rest of the system, the amount of memory you configure affects graphics and AI work as well as everyday multitasking.

The practical advice: since memory is chosen at purchase, lean toward more if you edit video, run large creative projects or experiment with local AI models. Our guide to how much RAM a laptop needs walks through typical workloads, and the Apple M5 laptop comparison lists current M5 MacBook configurations side by side.

Ecosystem: which phone do you use?

If you own an iPhone or iPad, a Mac adds a set of Continuity features that Apple lists on its macOS Continuity page. These include Handoff, which passes what you are doing between nearby devices, Universal Clipboard for copying on one device and pasting on another, iPhone Mirroring to see and use your iPhone from the Mac, AirDrop file sharing, iMessage and SMS texts on the Mac, and Sidecar to use an iPad as a second display.

Windows has its own bridge. Microsoft's Phone Link connects a Windows PC to select Android phones running Android 10 or later, with messages, calls, photos, notifications and mobile apps, and to iPhones running iOS 16 or later, with messages, calls, notifications and contacts. Microsoft notes that Phone Link does not support work or school accounts. If you use an Android phone, Windows usually fits more naturally. If you live in Apple's ecosystem, a Mac removes a lot of small friction; the macOS laptop comparison is the place to start.

Which one suits your use

Use these rules of thumb as a starting point, then confirm your own apps and games before you buy.

  • Students: check the school's required software and exam tools first, since some are Windows-only. If everything runs on macOS, a MacBook Air is a simple choice; otherwise pick a Windows laptop. See the student laptop picks.
  • Office work: web apps and video calls work on both, and many office suites offer Mac and Windows versions; confirm yours on the vendor's requirements page. Choose Windows if your company uses Windows-only tools or managed devices; choose a Mac if your workplace supports it and you prefer macOS.
  • Programming: web, mobile and cloud developers can work well on either. Windows-specific development, game engines with Windows-only tooling and driver work point to an x86 Windows laptop. Microsoft notes that Visual Studio, VS Code, .NET and Docker Desktop run natively on Windows on Arm. Compare options in the programming laptop guide.
  • Creative work: photo, video and audio apps are widely available on both platforms. Confirm plugins and codecs you depend on, and configure enough unified memory on a Mac because Apple lists it as an option you choose when you buy.
  • Gaming: pick an x86 Windows laptop with a dedicated GPU. It avoids both the macOS game availability gap and the Arm anti-cheat driver limits Microsoft describes.

Questions

Is a MacBook or a Windows laptop better for college?

Neither is better for every student. Check the software your courses and exams require, because some programs only run on Windows. If everything you need runs on macOS, a MacBook is a good fit; if not, choose a Windows laptop.

Can I run Windows on a MacBook?

Not with Boot Camp on a current Mac: Apple lists Boot Camp only for Intel-based Macs. On Apple silicon you need virtualization software, and Microsoft notes that some Windows 11 features, including certain security features, might not work fully in Parallels Desktop for Mac.

Do all Windows apps work on Windows on Arm laptops?

Many do, including unmodified x86 and x64 apps through emulation. Drivers are the exception: Microsoft says hardware, game and app drivers only work if they are built for Windows 11 Arm-based PCs, and games that rely on anti-cheat drivers not made for Arm might not run.

Can I upgrade the memory in a MacBook later?

Plan as if you cannot. Apple lists unified memory as a configure-to-order option chosen when you buy, so pick the amount you will need for the life of the laptop. Some Windows laptops have upgradeable memory, but check the maker's spec page for the exact model.

Will my Intel Mac apps keep working on Apple silicon?

Intel-only apps run through Rosetta today. Apple says Rosetta is available through macOS 27, and from macOS 28 only for certain older, unmaintained games. Move to Universal or Apple silicon versions of your apps where possible.
